The Best Flooring for Food Processing

Easy cleaning, hygienic, and durable for decades

Food production is hard on a floor. How are the floors in your facility holding up? Chemical exposure, extreme temperatures, and intense sanitation protocols take a toll on most industrial floors. Worse, the wear might not even be visible until it’s too late.

"We get a lot of high heat, steam, chemical use, and a lot of organic solids on the floor. So we needed something that is super inert and can take a beating. This tile was ideal for what we needed."

You’re juggling government inspections, supply chain disruptions, and an ever-changing market. The last thing you need is for your floor coating to peel away, exposing porous and definitely not hygienic concrete.

When you calculate how much you spent on that coating, plus the cost of repairs, plus the loss of income from having to take an area out of production - you might start to wonder how “affordable” that affordable option really was.

When you make a capital investment in your facility, it should make your life easier for the long haul. Food processor flooring, at a minimum, should do these four things:

· Comply with safety and hygiene regulations;

· Hold up under chemical, thermal, and mechanical stress;

· Prevent worker injuries;

· Last many years without routine repairs.

WHAT MAKES GREAT FOOD PLANT FLOORING?

HYGIENIC

Protect Your Products

Sanitation breaches are the stuff of nightmares for food processors - invisible pockets of mold and bacteria just lying in wait to contaminate your products.

Ceramic is a naturally hygienic material that resists contamination. Microbes simply can’t grow in it. Argelith tiles are HACCP certified and comply with both FDA and USDA requirements for building materials in food processing plants.

Cleaning vitrified tile is easy. Go ahead and use harsh cleansers, high heat, even steam jets – Hexalith tiles can handle it. You can destroy contaminants without destroying your floor. The unique easy-clean finish baked onto the tiles makes dirt easy to remove.

NONSKID FLOORING

Protect Your People

Is your floor slippery? It doesn’t have to be. Food production can be a messy business, with oil, water, and more hitting the floor. Hexalith comes in several surface profiles to provide increasing levels of slip resistance. Unlike flooring that gets its slip resistance from a rocky surface treatment, Hexalith has a dimpled texture pressed into the ceramic. This texture offers grip without grit.

An organized facility uses zones to separate high-risk activities from lower-risk ones. Zone markings can also let people know when they are entering a sanitary area or moving from a dry zone to a wet one. The problem with using tape or paint to mark these zones is that it eventually fades and wears away. Contrasting tiles, on the other hand, never fade or lose their vibrance, keeping people safe for years to come.

WATER AND CHEMICAL RESISTANT

Shrug Off Spills

Water is the natural enemy of concrete. It erodes the material, rusts iron rebar, feeds microbes, and carries contaminants deep into the slab.

It’s also a key part of most food processing. Whether it’s used as an ingredient or to flush out machinery, water is heavily used in food plants.

Your Hexalith tile shrugs off water. Vitrification packs the molecules of the tile so tight, there are no spaces left for the water to fill. Even when immersed, Hexalith absorbs as little as one-tenth of 1% of liquid.

That low absorption means your tile isn’t soaking up chemical spills, either. The materials in ceramic are naturally inert – they don’t react to acids, oils, or caustic substances. No matter what your business puts on it, Hexalith stays strong, dense, and stain resistant.

THERMAL SHOCK RESISTANT

From Ovens to Freezers, We’ve Got You Covered

What’s the weather like in your facility? Never mind, it doesn’t matter. Hexalith can handle temperatures well above boiling and well below freezing. Ceramic heats and cools slowly and evenly, so it won’t soften under an oven or crack in a freezer. With the right setting materials and expansion joints, your Hexalith floor keeps you covered no matter the forecast.

STRONG UNDER STRESS

Durable for Decades

In addition to all its other features, your Hexalith floor is incredibly durable under mechanical stress. Your heavy machinery won’t break it. Your heavy traffic won’t wear it down. It will keep on going, year after year, as long as your facility.

In the unlikely event you do manage to damage a tile, there is no shutting down the whole floor for repairs. A qualified contractor can remove the broken tile, correct whatever issue led to the break, and install a new tile – without impacting the rest of your facility.

What Our Customers Say

“I’m a big fan of Argelith tile and have used it in both of my breweries. It’s a great product that holds up to the rigors of brewing, including heavy water exposure and forklift traffic.”
